Important thing to remember, when being hired by a web design firm

Now i have a amazing tip on what to remember, when being hired by a web design firm. But let me tell you a bit about the background first. Now getting a job as a web designer can be tough, even tougher is being a freelance web designer because you may have some work today, but not tomorrow.

There are also some benefits working as a freelance, but also some bad things like not being able to pay your bills on time. So a lot of people are looking for a good job to settle in and can work there for couple of years. But this is really hard for beginners.

If you have great skills, and are searching for a job as some designer, let it be flash, animation, or graphic design, it doesn’t matter actually, this tip will help you a lot. Let’s make the scene ready now for me to show you the whole picture. You just graduated from a design or art school and want to get a good job with great pay. You fill out some application forms etc. Now a well knoen firm is interested in you, so they give you a chance of your lifetime. BUT you need to do a free project for them to show them what you’re really made of.

You make the project and you are really satisfied with it since it became one of the best ones you’ve ever made. Maybe even THE best one. The firm is also glad with your work and they hire you. You work for couple of months and then they fire you… the reason? Your skills aren’t improving or you may did couple of bad projects. The reasons for this can be you just couldn’t find the right inspiration or something like that. Your carrier is at the bottom.

Now you try to ask yourself, where did things go wrong? I’ll tell you where they got wrong… at the beginning… Remember the first project in this “scene” the one which depends of you being hired or not? Yes that was the point where you messed it up. Why? You just gave them your best work… in some cases maybe even for free…

Now my tip, or maybe we can set a rule here too, where you need to do some work for a design firm, where you have to show off your skills in one project is this… MAKE THE SAME PROJECT 3 TIMES! Yes, make it three times so you will have 3 different versions for it. Now here’s the best part, number them from 1-3 where 1 is the best one and 3 the least good one. Got confused? You shouldn’t be, let me tell you what goes next…

Version one (the best one) of this project IS FOR YOU, the second version is for a FUTURE PROJECT, and the third one is FOR THE DESIGN FIRM to show your skills.

Now why did you do that? The best design will be needed for the hard times when you lack inspiration or don’t have much time, so can the second one be too. The design firm will see in time, that you are developing your skills and always have something new to offer and you have fresh designs available etc. Your job seat will be yours for a longer time.

Also, if you made the third one really bad, you should either make a new one or use number 2. Always make a basket of designs ready for the hard times, you will need them. sometimes you will be made to make a design in a very short period of time and to keep up with the deadlines, you will need to use your lucky basket of goodies. I do this and it saved my ass couple of times :) so it may save yours too.

Interesting advice! But I don’t think you have problems with any design firm, your work is just amazing. Few days ago I was trying to make my own them for a blog, because I didn’t like anyone I found on net, but then I found yours and my blog is now just beautiful.

I’m glad you liked it :) In the near future, also the theme i’m using at the moment will be available for bloggers. It will also be distributed as a free blog template.

As for problems in firms it really depends where you work and what you work. I’m doing some freelancing at the moment and i really like it. It does depend from each designers wishes, skills etc.

ps: you have a nice blog there :)

what are the prospects of a graphic designer and a web application developer getting into a freelance career? I am currently employed but have plans of doing freelance in the very near future because I hate the routine in my current job.
