I always start to sketch the layout in Photoshop having the grid in my background almost until the finish of the web design. At last i change the grid background to the background that fits with css and the whole design looks clean.

For beginners it may be a bit hard to understand this so i suggest starting with a template. The 960px ones are most popular because of the monitor or LCD display resolutions nowadays and because they are easily dividable. You can get a free grid system at http://www.960.gs and not only for Photoshop but also for other software you use. Also there is a demo and more information on grid systems and web designs.

So just add those couple of hours, the smashed keyboard and mouse, hair loss and other things that happen when you make the code work in Internet Explorer to your end quote. This is the most time consuming and boring thing to do when designing every website.

Now one of the problems that occur is the bad scrolling in IE. The whole page loads and scrolls really slow and jerky. It’s hard to figure out what part of the code is responsible for this bug. After some time i figured out it it the PNG transparent background that makes problems in IE.

If we look closer at me current transparent bg pattern in Firefox we ca see it’s a 5px X 4px in size and repeated.

Now this is the problem that IE doesn’t like. I really dunno why but it may eat up his memory or something.

So whats a solution for this if you want to have transparent bg? Well i fixed this with a new css style, that is only for IE 6 and above using this code:

This css file was a save as from the original file. I deleted all the css styles except the lines where i had the transparent png bg and then i changed the 5×5px one with a new 1×1 one. I saved the transparency but i lost the pattern in IE.

After that i haven’t had any problems with slow scrolling in IE. I know i may have lost the pattern, but i saved the transparency and got rid of the scrolling problem which was so bad that people would leave my site thinking it has spy ware or bad scripts etc.

I tried to find the best and my recent work for the portfolio . I also didn’t just add them to a wordpress page, instead i made a new one. I really wanted people that will be looking at my work, to not get distracted by the blog design and it’s content i have now. so i just put a logo and added the thumbnails of my work which than open in full size with the help of lightbox.

As for services, i’m really not a good copywriter so i need more time to write all of this stuff for it. And since there are a lot of pages i’ll try to make at least one daily. But the descriptions for logotype design/corporate identity and website design.

This would be a great thing for me in ways of getting more subscribers to my blog and also a lot of exposure and even more design work.

So being a big fan of this field also made me want to learn it. I know that it takes a lot of time to learn only the basics (i’ve had some help with some helpful books). So with these skills i was able to start on working on a new project, which will take a while. I will be making a flash version of my site soon which will also have a intro movie.

The best thing of the intro movie will be, that it will featuring ME in 3D The scenario is still a work in progress but the modeling and texturing of my character is going pretty well.Here are some screenshots of different models.

…that they have found a really nice way for promoting their site. Since they’re a directory, they’ve gathered all the logotypes of their web apps sites and made a little movie. But actually there isn’t anything little in it since it has about 5000 logotypes in it.

For people with good eyes it’s also a good way to get inspiration or if you pause/play a lot.

This experience we gathered about advertising banners while surfing over a longer period of time has brought us to one though:”Most of banner ads are bad.” But this does depend. If we are viewing bad sites, we get bad banners, popular and quality sites are safe. Still, we have subconsciously developed a skill, to not look at banners and ignore them.

Another step was developing software that would automatically hide these banners from us. This is a bad thing for publishers of these ads and the owners of the website the ads were displayed on. Meaning for them lower profits. Some popular sites have been sold or even closed because of this since the hosting bill was too big. If i compare this to newspaper media it would mean, that newspapers would die too since they depend on the advertising income. And a lot of people would lose their jobs too.

A interesting thing is the development of different banner sizes. The 468×60 is the most used one and the most ignored one. I also think it was the one of the first banner sizes available, i don’t remember since i wasn’t into web design in those years when banners were invented.

Banners & designers problem

What’s the next problem banners will die in my opinion soon? The prices for designing a banner have fallen down by more then 50%. Meaning the low profit doesn’t cover up the work time. Banner design was about 80$ 468×60 per banner and i’m talking about a gif banner. Today flash banner design costs about $40.

What’s the reason for such low prices? The answer is simple and short… Because of Outsourcing. The design world is really competitive, and the work is good and well payed. Also, you can learn it at home, for free, you only need computer+internet access. I personally started designing as a hobby.

Prices have drastically fallen because designers from countries like India, Philippines other similar low standard countries (i saw this problem even in my own). They did not had much work so they need to figure a way to attract clients. The easiest way is to reduce prices. So they did under payed work, but because of the low costs living in these countries, they still got rich there.

After that others had less work and they had to reduce prices more then them etc. So this is my opinion why the prices fell to where they are today. This is a big problem for designers today. Not just banner design prices, also other web design elements have lower prices today.

The only thing that can affect the prices today and to get payed for the time you design is branding. There are a lot designers that are well known and they choose what the prices for their designs is. Banners can be this way sold for $150 or more. And also the quality is WAY better.

So is banner design really going to die in couple of years? Or will some please invent a new way of advertising with banners?
