Before i start a post and make a new category for further post related to this topic, i want to say, that i will be talking mostly about basics. So for all of those advanced and SEO experts, you’ll need to wait couple of posts until i get there
I’m making these guides and articles mostly for new people interested in blogging and maybe even making some money online. But you can still stay and maybe re-learn some information you already forgot. So here it goes…
One of the most important things about every website is Search engine optimization. Now this is a really huge topic so i’ll try to explain in short now and then go further down the rabbit whole in the future.
Every web page or website gets it’s visitors mostly from search engines. But how does a search engine send traffic to the site? A visitor that is mostly searching for something will go to Google, use a keyword and hit “search”, he will then get a lot of relevant results. Now Google ranks these using their mathematical algorithm. Now SEO or Search Engine Optimization is mostly getting to know how this algorithm works and trying to apply it to your pages, to rank higher. That way, you can make to the #1 position for keywords which give most traffic to your site. Easy huh?
Well it isn’t! NO-ONE knows exactly how the Google algorithm works. Even if someone would, he wouldn’t tell it to the whole world since traffic equals money and when money comes into the game, you really don’t want to have competition right? So in short, you can’t know how Google EXACTLY ranks your pages, but there is a lot of information which even Google gives out, that will make your page rank better. So the art of knowing how to get good rankings and traffic from search engines is called search engine optimization.
Also, because this art is so profitable a lot of people want to learn it so there is a lot of competition. But if you really want to make it to the top, you will and you can, it just takes some(or a lot) more time to do it.
Let’s take a look at a example how SEO works. If you go to Google and type “Darjan Panic” which is my name, you will find my site at the first position (look at pic below).

Now there are some reasons why i’m number one… First one is my name isn’t too common so it’s really rare
and the second one, i don’t have a lot of competition if we check the results.

So each time a person searches for “Darjan Panic” he will find me, which i also want right? Now the more competitive keywords, the more traffic they can get you (and $$$ too). But are really hard to get to top. For example my site is on the second page for “Freelance graphic design” that has more than 1.5 million sites/results/competiton.
That’s all for today, in the next post i’ll be taking about some methods of SEO and how they work so stay tuned.
