Buying a Digital SLR camera and equipment

In my last post i talked about which digital photography books i ordered to learn more of this hobby. So the next step is getting a real good Digital Camera. This is a hard process especially for beginners like me. Thank god i had a class about digital photography in my faculty so i already know some basics. I figured if i really want to learn photography like a pro, i will need good equipment to grow with.

The digital camera should be good and has to had the options and settings i will need. So those basic cameras won’t do,i would need a digital single lens reflex camera. So later i an use different camera lenses and other equipment. But which one? Which brand etc.? I needed a expert on this so i asked a friend of mine, Simon Koležnik. He’s a good photographer and also knows A LOT of technical stuff about digital photography. I also attended his (and few other photographers) exhibition where i could saw what amazing things they made and what equipment they used.

Now i found out couple of things. Choosing a brand could be the hardest part, each of these big brands like Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax and Sony have their own advantages and disadvantages. so it’s hard to choose from. Also the marketing and commercials play with your mind here.

I had to figure out what i will be shooting, which methods etc. and came to conclusion that i need a overall camera. Also since i’m learning i need support, a better support can come from a friend that uses such equipment and has lots of experience then forums. Remember the photographers i mentioned earlier? Well two of them used Nikons D70 and their photos were great.

Now i know that this photos didn’t came out so good just because of the digital photography equipment they used. A lot of skill and knowledge is required for this. But the digital camera shouldn’t limit you to your skills.

So after a lot of reading, talking, asking,… i came to a conclusion that i’d get me a Nikon D40x or Nikon D80. I’m still not 100% sure which one, since there are some factors involved like. D40x is cheaper, smaller etc. so i could invest more money in new camera lenses. But the D80 is better, pricier and has some functions that are in some scenarios needed, but the D40x doesn’t support them. So in the end, i think i’ll get the NIKON D80 and have it for a longer time while buying new glass. I hope again don’t change my mind :)

For me, I’ll choose D40x and invest in the lenses since lenses play a vital role in achieving good quality pictures when u r using DSLR cameras

Why don’t we choose Canon ? I think that Canon xxxD is good for beginner :) . In my opinion, having a good lens is more important than Camera.
